Abstract
This edition of the Office of the sixth-century St Kentigern, or ‘Mungo’, patron saint of Glasgow, was launched at a Civic Event chaired by the Lord Provost’s representative, Baillie Catherine McMaster, in the Mitchell Library, Glasgow, on 19 May 2011. The Office is edited from the late thirteenth-century Sprouston Breviary (National Library of Scotland, Adv. MS 18. 2. 13B) and supporting manuscripts, the Herdmanston Breviary (National Library of Scotland, Adv. MS 18. 2. 13B) and Edinburgh University Library, Special Collections MS 27. It is a rhymed Office with proper chants and readings based on events in the legendary life of the saint, reconstructed – in so far as modern research will allow – according to the Use of Sarum, which was disseminated throughout the British Isles in the thirteenth century. The chant melodies and translations into English are published here for the first time. Included is an edition of the Latin texts and translations of the Office for the St Kentigern in the Aberdeen Breviary, printed in1510.
