Abstract

This was written for Dr David Code's "Envoicing the Other" study day and concert at the University of Glasgow on 10 November, 2012. The programme note from that premier: I want to examine this idea of “otherness” and what it could possibly mean in the 21st Century. I do not believe the world has been made so small by communication and travel technologies as to eliminate any sense of cultural Others. And yet, the notion of Exotic has changed since the 1920s, and I do not feel compelled to envoice a purely cultural Other in my music. I wish to look in another direction than others' cultures. As I sit and listen to the rain, I understand again that I find beauty in the voicelessness or Silence (J. Cage) of sounds that have not been fashioned for the purpose of my enjoyment or edification. For me envoicing the Other can mean looking beyond human culture and psychology to the natural world. I have increasingly sought natural models such as the flocking of birds or the system of a watershed to provide something of this voiceless Other in my work. In this short piece for flute, 'cello and piano, I intend to start with some small portion of Ravel's Chansons Madécasses, perhaps a segment of melody, or a particular mode, and transform it using a set of algorithms inspired by an event/process in the natural world, the result of which will be to some extent beyond my ability to understand at the outset.
