Abstract

Two square planar, mononuclear, ferric complexes have been investigated by X-ray crystallography, magnetochemistry, and Mössbauer spectroscopy, namely, [FeIII(L)2]1− (see structure) and [FeIII(qdt)2]1− (qdt2− = o-quinoxalinedithiolate). Both possess an intermediate spin S = 3/2 ground state. Density functional theoretical calculations corroborate this ground state.
