Abstract

The Schiff base ligand 2-((E)-(2-mercaptophenylimino)-methyl)-4,6-di-tert-butyl-phenolato(2-), L2−, is demonstrated to be a versatile, redox active ligand with the isolation of monomeric [FeIII(L−L)Br]0, 1, where (L−L)2− is a sulfide-bridged ligand dimer, and dimeric [RuIII2(L)2Cl2(NCCH3)2]0, 2. The latter can be twice one-electron oxidized to afford phenoxyl radical complexes [RuIII2(L•)(L)Cl2(NCCH3)2]+, [2]+, and [RuIII2(L•)2Cl2(NCCH3)2]2+, [2]2+, as shown by UV−vis and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopies and broken symmetry DFT calculations.
