Abstract

The five-membered electron transfer series [Re(bdt)3]z (z = +1, 0, −1, −2, −3) has been characterized by spectroscopic and theoretical techniques. The remarkable electron paramagnetic resonance spectra for the S = 1/2 neutral ReV(bdt)3 and dianionic [ReIV(bdt)3]2− have been correctly interpreted for the first time and, together with X-ray absorption spectroscopic data and DFT calculations, provide insight into the unique properties of compounds with trigonal prismatic geometry.
