Abstract
Three members of the electron transfer series [V(dithiolene)3]z (z = 1+, 0, 1−, 2−, 3−, 4-) have been probed by vanadium and sulfur K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy. A V(IV) central ion exists for the neutral, monoanionic, and dianionic species that are interrelated by ligand-centered redox processes. Oxidized ligands are essential for a trigonal prismatic geometry in this series, whereas more reduced members are octahedral.
