Abstract
2011 marks the 100th anniversary of the publication of Rutherford’s seminal paper [1] which first identified the atomic nucleus and its essential role in the structure of matter. This crucial discovery marked the birth of nuclear physics and lead to enormous advances in our understanding of nature. Rutherford’s legacy has profound and far reaching influences on the shape of the modern world we live in.
