Abstract

sonemics I/Ib is an audiovisual work for live video and spatial sound made in 2012. It is a collaboration with film maker Kate Burton and is one of a series of live audiovisual pieces. It was performed at the SoundLab series at the City Halls, Glasgow in October 2012. Burton's digital film material is used as a basis for simultaneous live cutting of sound and image. The visual material comes from the Ritz Café in Millport, Isle of Cumbrae, comprising shots of old Formica surfaces on tables and walls. This filming gave rise to the idea of ‘surface exploration’, a notion which came to underpin the whole sonemics project. The sound and video were live cut together as a performance, with the sound made from various prerecorded concrète and synthetic sources. Sonemics Ib is another experiment in the sonemics series. This is a live algorithm which traces visual paths around the zig-zag lines of the one of the table-top patterns. Dots zig-zag their way around, making random decisions about changes of direction once they collide with a ‘wall’ in the pattern. The motion is mapped to a basic computer-based synthesiser to create an audiovisual automaton. It was used as a coda for the City Halls show in Glasgow in 2012.
