Abstract

The Q2 -dependence of the generalized GDH integral for the proton has been measured in the range 1.2 GeV2<Q2<12 GeV2 by scattering longitudinally polarized positrons on a longitudinally polarized hydrogen gas target. HERMES has previously published a measurement of the deep inelastic portion of the generalized GDH integral. New results for the full integral were shown, including the resonance contribution for W<2 GeV. The contributions of the nucleon resonance and deep inelastic regions have been evaluated separately. The latter has been found to dominate for Q2>3 GeV2. The total integral shows no significant deviation from a 1/Q2 behavior in the measured Q2 range indicating no effects due to either nucleon resonance excitations or non-leading twist. The combination of the data in the resonance and DIS regions provides the first measurement of the Q2 -dependence of the generalized GDH integral.
