Abstract
The MSc in Applied Carbon Management at the University of Glasgow is unusual in that it offers students the opportunity to undertake a 60 credit work placement in lieu of the normal 60 credit dissertation, subject to availability. On completion of the work placement, a number of graduates have been offered employment by the work placement provider. The employment has included voluntary work, part-time paid work, short-term contacts, right up to full-time permanent positions within the organisation.

Based on 4 years experience of organising and assessing work placements, this workshop will examine the process of setting up work placements for graduate students – from the initial contact with the work placement provider, to the final evaluations and presentations by the students themselves.

There will be 3 activities within the workshop that delegates will be involved with: 1. Identifying which information is required by an employer when making the initial contact; 2. Identifying key documents and procedures required for the organisation of a work placement; 3. Assessing a work placement as part of a degree programme.

By the end of the session, delegates will have the knowledge on how to set up, assess, and run a simple postgraduate student short-term placement.
