Abstract
The essay is a case study – or micro-history - of an ‘ordinary’ silk manufacturer who died at the beginning of the French Revolution, leaving both a will and an inventory. Benoît Sauzay thus enters the historical record for the first time. The essay locates him in his social and cultural milieu from cradle to grave, focussing in particular on the contents of the substantial library he left. This library reveals the catholicity of the taste of Lyonnais manufacturers of this period, their awareness of Enlightenment ideas, and their fascination with Science and Religion.
