Abstract

Fundamental question of hadron and nuclear physics can be addressed in interaction of anti-protons with nucleon and nuclei. The planned FAIR facility at GSI featuring a high energy storage ring for anti-protons will deliver a high quality beam ideally suited to access gluonic excitations and the physics of strange and charm quarks with unprecedented accuracy. A universal detector system called PANDA is proposed to surround an internal target covering almost the complete solid angle. The high luminosity and state of the art detector devices will allow to explore QCD in the perturbative and non-perturbative regime using a wide range of inclusive and exclusive reactions.
