Abstract
It is important that primary teachers are encouraged and supported, through CPD opportunities, to step away from the notion, partly borne out of their own experiences, that school science is about the accumulation of scientific knowledge and skills. This paper suggests that a possible way forward is the creation of 'communities of collaborative enquiry' (CoCE) rooted in an interpretation of experiential learning that stresses the importance of collaborative activity rather than imitative practice.
