Abstract
The Council of Trent and the Counter-Reformation heralded a new set of values and beliefs which conditioned everyday religious life accross Catholic Europe. However, the assimilation of the guidelines condensed in the Council's Canons and Decrees also imbued artists and their outputs. In this article the author discuss the problems posed by one such text, a sonnet by the Portuguese poet Vasco Mousinho de Quevedo, insofar as it appears to contradict the Canons and Decress in the language and defiant postulation of God as a deceiver, whilst proposing a compromise submission to the discussion of Free Will in the context of the Reformation. The author argues that Quevedo is fully compliant with Counter-Reformist values, albeit presenting these in a highly intellectualized form, as is common in his work.
