Abstract
This article proposes a “transversal” or diagonal reading of Caillois through, or “across”, Jean Paulhan. Taking as my point of departure a text by Paulhan about a stone, “The Philosopher’s Stone”, I go on to analyse the two writers in light of the pages Caillois devotes to stones, and to his theory of the “natural fantastic” in Cases d’un échiquier, to conclude with what I call a “lithogrammatological” reading of Caillois.
