Abstract
Patricia Thompson (née Patricia Bellmont Amphlett; born March 17, 1949 in Paddington Hospital, Sydney, Australia) achieved national celebrity as a pop singer at the age of fourteen, when her first recording, a “surf song” single, reached number two on the national charts, just behind the Beatles’ “I Wanna Hold Your Hand.” It was the beginning of a high-profile career that is summarized in the following interview. Her recorded output includes over 30 singles and EPs and a dozen LPs/CDs. Apart from her activity as a performer, she has been prominent in related culture and industry organizations. She has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors, and, in 1998, was one of several Australian rock pioneers commemorated in a postage-stamp series.
