Abstract
The World Health Organization (WHO) has recently put economic crisis at the top of the list of challenges facing the WHO European Region in the 21st century. The other challenges on the list are widening inequalities; an ageing population; increasing levels of chronic disease; migration and urbanization; and environmental change and climate change. It seems likely that many of these challenges will also be negatively impacted by economic crisis.1 The exact nature of the health effects of the present crisis will take many years to unfold.
