Abstract

Spatial statistics as a sub-discipline has a long tradition, but modern environmental science is offering new challenges. In this short commentary paper, we consider the specific challenges posed by environmental policy, regulation and management for the freshwater environment, focussing on two specific pieces of European legislation, namely the Water Framework and the Floods Directives.
