Abstract
This article is a commissioned catalogue essay for a group exhibition of works by twelve painters (Neil Clements, Michael Fullerton, Lotte Gertz, Charlie Hammond, Louise Hopkins, Merlin James, Andrew Kerr, Victoria Morton, Carol Rhodes, Tony Swain, Hanneline Visnes, George Ziffo). The essay locates the work of these artists in relation to debates on the status of painting today (including arguments made by WJT Mitchell, Isabelle Graw, Jan Verwoert and others), and also in relation to the discourses of painting's supposed 'death' and 'return' in the 1970s and 1980s.
