A two-step method for the directed synthesis of high-nuclearity Mn<sup>III</sup>-Mn<sup>II</sup>-Cu<sup>II</sup> heterometallic transition metal complexes is described. The synthesis starts from a preformed copper(II) complex to trap an inner hexacapped cuboctahedral manganese oxide core.
