Abstract
What does the term 'school instruments' mean? (Original in Spanish). This article discusses different ways of understanding musical instruments and outlines some twentieth century events that influenced the development of instruments for the music classroom. After considering the added difficulties of performance technique with beginner students seven criteria are considered for distinguishing appropriate instruments for such students. These criteria emphasise their use rather than their characteristics. Educational implications include that the majority of instruments and sound objects could be considered 'school instruments' if these seven criteria were followed.
