Abstract

How Venetian was Titian? This research monograph questions the master's role as the leading painter in Renaissance Venice, arguing that his courtly identity was alien to the Republican ethos of Venice. The individualistic trajectory of Titian's mighty career, culminating in his inimitable late style, had a disrutoive effect on artistic practice in Venice and effectively brought its tradition of Renaissance painting to an end.
