Abstract

This paper presents a critical re-assessment of the character of both the structural remains and the fluctuations in garrison of the Roman fort at Newstead near Melrose, one of the largest and most important strategic foci in the Roman occupation of Lowland Scotland. It reconsiders the chronology and historical context of that occupation during the first and second centuries AD, highlighting areas of ongoing debate.
