Abstract
This article considers the anti-Scottish feeling of English Whig politician, John Wilkes, in the 1760s and 1770s, and reflects on the controversy between Wilkes and Tobias Smollett in their rival periodicals, The North Briton and The Briton. It is an accompanying article to a paper given in the University of Glasgow's 'Vox Populi' series of talks, given in 2012-13. The article is freely available on The Scotsman website.
