Abstract

Flat ownership - the ownership of individual flats within a larger property - creates specific management problems, particularly for organising repairs and maintenance. This report draws together two studies looking at the legal systems for flat ownership and the practical support given to flat owners, one examining the British position whilst the other explores arrangements in Australia, France and the USA. The report concludes that current and proposed reforms will remove some of the worst defects of the law but that more needs to be done if flat owners are to ensure the adequate repair and maintenance of their properties.
