Abstract
The design of active control systems for modern helicopters presents a number of important challenges. One of the most significant and fundamental is the accurate modelling of the dynamics of the vehicle itself. This paper provides a review of some of the problems of helicopter flight mechanics modelling for flight control system design. It highlights the need for well validated models and discusses issues which must be addressed in applying system identification techniques to the validation of theoretical models used as a bsais for control system design in this specialised field of application.
