Abstract

Mathematical and computer-based models provide a foundation for explaining complex behaviour, for decision-making, for engineering design and for problems of real-time simulation for training and research. Many engineering design techniques depend on suitable models. Assessment of a given model’s fitness for an intended application is therefore critically important and this book gives emphasis to issues of model quality and ideas of model testing and validation. It draws on applications from the fields of mechanical, aeronautical and control engineering. Linear and nonlinear lumped parameter models based on ordinary differential equations are given particular emphasis.
