Abstract

Mathematical and computer-based models provide a foundation for explaining complex behaviour, for decision-making, for engineering design and for problems of real-time simulation for training and research. Many engineering design techniques depend on suitable models. Assessment of a given model’s fitness for an intended application is therefore critically important and this book gives emphasis to issues of model quality and ideas of model testing and validation. It draws on applications from the fields of mechanical, aeronautical and control engineering. Linear and nonlinear lumped parameter models based on ordinary differential equations are given particular emphasis. The book comprises ten chapters covering key topics, including: The principles of system modelling; Integrated systems and their significance for system modelling; Problem organization; Inverse simulation for system modelling and design; Methods and applications of parameter sensitivity analysis; Experimental modelling; Model quality and the validation of dynamic models; Real-time simulation, virtual prototyping and partial system testing; and Model management. The book concludes with a discussion of strategic issues, and research and development work on modelling and simulation methods for integrated systems applications.
