Abstract

We investigate the third-order nonlinear optical property of a range of [beta]-carotene homologues, which have different numbers (n) of conjugated C=C double bonds from n=7 to 15, by using third-harmonic generation Maker fringe technique. The results clearly show that there is a remarkable enhancement of the third-order optical nonlinearity when n=15, which is a four fold increase compared with n=11 (i.e. -carotene).
