Abstract

This article discusses Alan Massie’s Arthur the King and Palona Díaz-Mas’s El rapto del santo Grial in terms of each writer’s use of the Arthurian legend. Massie uses his powerful erudition to explore traditional values, the education of a ruler and his modes of behaviour, religion and the abuse of hierarchical power, and the ideological motives behind historical accounts. Díaz-Mas is concerned more with the processes of literature, with parody as a ludic enterprise, but still demythifies military values and exposes the cruelty of supposed codes of honour, while focusing on the victims and the marginalised of history. Both writers use the medieval world as a prism through which to reflect on constants in human conduct. Postmodern in their approachs and in their concern with the relationship between discourse and power, but neither adopts a position of total postmodern indecidibility. Rather postmodern concerns are refracted through the literary forms, oral and written, of the medieval world.
