Abstract
Vasco Mousinho de Quevedo Castelo Branco is the first published author of emblems in the Portuguese language (1596). However, his use of emblems often serves a particular agenda. By the very nature of their reading process, emblems come to serve the purpose of instruction by 'tricking' Man in the delight of reading them. The result is that the reader will have been led through a process of ascension, coming closer to Quevedo's post-Tridentine religious fervour.
