Abstract
This article attempts a critical approach to picturebooks through looking at what the word-picture relationship implies for readers. The gap between words and images, where meanings are made, is examined using the work of reader-response theorists, in particular Wolfgang Iser and Louise Rosenblatt. In the first half of this article, this gap is examined in a recent picturebook by Anthony Browne, The Shape Game.
