Abstract
Within programmes of initial teacher education, History has traditionally enjoyed a respected status as part of the general formation of all new teachers. In recent years, this status has been seriously questioned and the study of History has faced unprecedented critique. This paper analyses the reasons for this change of attitude towards the study of History in initial teacher education. It then offers a systematic defence of History as a vital component of the general education of teachers because of the unique contribution of the subject to the understanding of key professional issues.
