Abstract
I have just read the most moving and profound novel, Marilynne Robinson’s Gilead. In it, an elderly pastor writes a series of reflections to his young son, explaining where he has come from, and offering the fruit of his own experience. The novel is tightly constructed, but its technique at times is to allow the old man’s mind to drift through several subjects, one thought leading to another, perhaps related by the mention of a person or a place. The fact that the pastor is unwell, and does not expect to live to see his precious son grow up, gives the novel tremendous power and pathos. I was reminded of this novel in these verses of Mark’s Gospel.
