Abstract
Poor oral hygiene is associated with the development of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP).1 VAP is the most common nosocomial infection seen in intensive care patients and is associated with significant morbidity, mortality and costs.1.2 Following recent National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) recommendations regarding the prevention of VAP,3 oral hygiene care bundles have been implemented throughout ICUs in the United Kingdom.
