Abstract

This article looks at some of the economic policies of the Islamic Republic during distinctly different periods: nationalisation immediately after the revolution of February 1979, the war economy during the Iran-Iraq war, economic liberalisation after 1988 and the current period, where one witnesses unprecedented levels of exploitation and inequality. The article explains the contradictions within the Shia clergy regarding issues such as nationalisation and the role of the state in the economy in the early years of the new regime, the economic liberalisation of the post-Khomeini era and the privatisation policies that started during the Khatami presidency and have continued under the current government with disastrous consequences for the majority of the population.
