Abstract

An examination of the reception and implementation in Welsh dioceses of the reforming ideals of the popes during the eleventh and twelfth centuries, with a particular focus on the reception of canonical texts and the practice of clerical celibacy. It is argued, contrary to the standard historiography on the period, that ecclesiastical developments in Welsh dioceses broadly conform to the situation in Anglo-Norman England.
