Abstract

Research into photonic crystal (PhC) and photonic band-gap structures has been motivated, from the start, by their potential for controlling, modifying, and enhancing the light emission process from high-refractive-index solid structures. This chapter considers the possible role of such structures when they are incorporated into semiconductor-diode-based light-emitting devices (LEDs). To provide a proper framework for discussion and analysis, space is devoted to the historical development of III–V semiconductor-based LEDs and to competing alternative approaches that have been demonstrated for enhanced light extraction. The possible advantages of photonic quasi-crystal structures over regularly periodic PhC structures for advanced LED designs are also considered.
