Abstract

Having made the journey to Trondheim, I had been much impressed by Indredavik’s team approach to early mobilisation and therein lies the genesis for this study. When we originally conceived and undertook our Early Mobilisation study, a literature review indicated that little had been published in the field.

Bernhardt et al.’s work should set the benchmark for early mobilisation and provide us with clear evidence as to the way forward. The extent to which healthcare professionals take on the implications of this work has yet to be determined and the question of medical stability I think remains open until then.

However, it is interesting to note how the sharing and publishing of results can result in new collaborations, so necessary for multi-centre randomised control trials (RCTs). Subsequently we (Langhorne, Wu, Bernhardt, Walters, Ritchie, Smith) have submitted a proposal to Chest, Heart and Stroke Scotland for the Scottish arm of the AVERT (a very early rehabilitation trial) trial and are currently awaiting the outcome.
