Abstract

This paper looks at the archaeology of writing in the 6/8th centuries in western Britain and Ireland. New evidence for literacy is presented in the form of graffiti, book satchels and manuscript production, and it is suggested that Adoman of Iona, amonst his other accomplishments, may have been responsible for the production of the the civil survey of Dal Riada, one of the earliest such documents in north-western Europe
