Abstract

This article compares the web presence of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation and the British Liberal Democrats. The research finds that Communist Party web activity tends to stay within the bounds of party control, while supporters of the Liberal Democrats make greater use of external social networking and are more connected with the broader political sphere. The findings demonstrate the need to understand how national political organisations and attitudes may shape the democratising potential of the online sphere.
