Abstract
This article reflects on a participative examination of frontline workers’ understanding and experience of Social Capital using popular education techniques. It was carried out by a group of trainee community workers from the Inverclyde Community Apprentice Project, along with an academic from the University of Glasgow and an experienced Community Learning and Development practitioner. It explores the themes of Social Capital, suggesting it the gap that exists between policy and reality and exploring the need for a more radical definition if the concept is to be of use to local communities. It also outlines an approach to community research and the possible role for an education in supporting community action. Coming as it does from the perspective of front-line community workers, it has important points to make about the ambiguous role of local authority in the development of social capital and the difficult position that puts workers in.
