Abstract
This article presents an illustrated analysis of the history of photographic representations of the modern circus, looking specifically at the aesthetic and technical challenges this mode of art/entertainment poses for the camera. Starting with the work of nineteenth-century studio photographers it explores a range of responses (mainly European and North American) to the problem of capturing an entertainment form so insistently defined by its sense of 'liveness' and danger through the still image.
