Abstract

This introductory chapter provides a broad outline of current academic and public discourse surrounding Sino-African relations, which run the gamut of appraisals from optimism to deep apprehension. It outlines the context within which student mobility between Africa and China takes place, as well as the history of such mobility to China, with particular reference to African students, whose presence in Chinese universities dates back to the early 1960s. All of this aids in providing essential background information, and in making clear the book’s aims, as well as its theoretical and empirical contribution to studies of migration and mobility. This chapter also provides a summary of the content of the following chapters.
