Abstract

This chapter first outlines the development of stratified patterns of international student mobility over time. To do so, it employs a range of critical macro-theoretical explanations of globalisation and internationalisation, which lead broadly to the rejection of the notion that processes associated with globalisation are equitable and consensual. I argue that, just as the structure of the global political economy, along with historical colonial relationships, are important explanatory factors for the expansion of international student mobility between core regions and the global periphery, the development of student mobility between a regional hegemon in China and its periphery in Africa is also a corollary of global structural relations. I then go on to explore the discourse surrounding Africa-China mobility, arguing that China’s dual position as hegemon and counter-hegemon is mirrored in the discourses it produces.
