Abstract

In this chapter, which combines a comprehensive literature review with available statistical data, we provide a general overview of the main developments in international student mobility and migration over the past two decades. We thereby describe global student flows, indicating where students come from and go to, as well as the phases in their study career when they become mobile and the main determinants which lead higher education students to decide to study abroad, focusing on micro-, meso- and macro-level processes. The chapter illustrates the significant expansion of scientific knowledge on international student mobility and migration over the past two decades, revealing its complexity and the importance of considering both structural and agentic factors when analysing the phenomenon.
