Abstract

Confessions of a Young Man (1888) by the Irish novelist George Moore traces the experiences of the narrator Edward Dayne amongst artistic and literary circles in Paris during the second half of the nineteenth century. Like the author, Dayne inherits wealth that allows him to experiment with a career as a painter before switching to poetry and literary journalism. Highly versatile in form and content, Moore's novel offers a gossip-filled insider's account of French art and literature; as well as presenting the story of a creative artistic awakening and providing a meditation upon influence and formation in the tradition of the Bildungsroman.
