This chapter describes the witnesses -- primarily manuscripts and printed books -- for the earliest writings in medieval and early modern Scotland. It draws attention to the complex mixture of language and cultures represented in these witnesses, and challenges simplistic definitions of what is meant by 'Scottish literature'.
