Abstract

From the eighteenth century, thousands of Scots moved to Appalachia. They encountered historical factors of forced migration, slavery, and segregation – issues which are not fully addressed in contemporary Scottish schools. Having established an international network of scholars, performers, and stakeholders in traditional music (Bluegrass, Old Time, Folk, Celtic) and education (History, Music), this project will use the wayfarers’ musical heritage to confront historical issues, developing prior and ongoing research on the uses of music on addressing challenging histories, and for other-than-musical purposes.
