Abstract

Schools can be important sites for initiating social awareness and change initiatives in addressing and advancing social justice. Despite much emphasis on situating parents, school managers, teachers and young people as agents in schools, less has been written about how they are actually involved in activism and social change initiatives that disrupt cisheteronormativity. This chapter brings together five vignettes with direct quotes from queer teachers, learners and their allies who choose to act, independently or collectively, regardless of barriers to disrupt cisheteronormativity in their schools. Drawing on the findings from the five cases, the Chapter interrogates what happens when queer teachers, learners and their allies step up and challenge cisheteronormativity. The findings indicate that although schooling hinders expressions of social action, there are pockets of queer activism and allyship. Queer activism itself, therefore, as this chapter argues, takes increasingly situated forms – sometimes emanating from within school spaces themselves.
