Abstract

We can take several insights from the present research, which has argued that most schools in South Africa are quintessentially heterosexist and cisgenderist institutions. This chapter draws on research-based insights to call for informed action and offers several directions for policy, curriculum, teacher professional development and school climate. Additionally, it argues that schools and Queer Social Movements must gesture toward each other to forge alliances that respond to and affirm gender and sexuality diversity. The chapter, therefore, holds space for what partnerships between schools and queer social movements might look like. To ignore the productive possibilities of this connection may be remarkably short-sighted of schools.
